Every athlete’s ultimate goal is to win. Being a former NCAA athlete myself I can relate to the perspective of an elite athlete and the attitude he or she needs in order to be victorious. Preparation plus opportunity equals success. And proper preparation also prevents poor performance. One of the key components to most athletes’ preparation is music.
From swimming to baseball to basketball and football, you can find athletes everywhere with headphones on their heads, getting mentally pumped up to face their competition. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” – Luke 6:45. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” – Proverbs 18:21. “A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth.” – Proverbs 13:2. If the athlete’s goal is truly to win, then the ideal music and lyrics that could positively fuel that athlete’s desire are that of which speak life, promise, and victory!
One day on a basketball court two young men were competing in a one-on-one game. The score was 9 to 2 and the first one to score 21 points would win. The young man who was losing at the time remembered what he learned about the power of positive confession and decided to put his knowledge to use. Although he felt down he tried to pick himself up and began to repeat to himself “Keep the momentum, stay in the groove!” ‘Keep the momentum, stay in the groove!” under his breath. That young man scored 19 points in a row and won the game!
The moral of the story is that words have powerful meaning. Through words that we speak to ourselves or words that we hear in music. If an athlete’s goal is to win and to be a productive team player, it would prove to be in the athlete’s best interest to guard his heart from destructive words and empower his mind with positive words and expressions of victory, triumph and success…don’t you think?
Just remember: “Words can plant the seed of and influence success or failure in your mind and in the mind of another.”
What type of music and lyrics do you believe truly INSPIRE and EMPOWER athletes to perform at their highest level? What inspires you?
